Hugh Masekela urges pride in being African after wowing Ghana
World-famous jazz artiste Hugh Masekela says the time has come for Africa to stop imitating other cultures. Speaking exclusively to happyghana.com and e.tv Ghana after performing for almost two hours at the State Banquet Hall, Hugh Masekela said Africa has a very rich culture heritage so there is no point imitating other cultures.
He said Africans have a diverse heritage which we need to take a look at and continue because "you do not see other cultures imitating us... We are a big society of buyers so we do not produce anything," he added.
He lamented that Africa has become so invisible such that when people come to the continent "they come and see animals and geographical sites because they can´t find us." The South African ace trumpeter charged every African to try and make themselves visible in their own way.
Commenting on his performance, Hugh Masekela said he makes a living performing and jokingly remarked: "be like Alomo Bitters (Kasapreko); be like Global Media Alliance; bring us to Ghana so that we can perform for you all the time".
Martyn Mensah Managing Director of Kasapreko Company Limited said Kasapreko as a brand is very proud of its African tradition and roots, so they have no regret associating themselves with the concert. He said this concert will continue because of their strong partnership with Global Media Alliance and with Hugh Masekela as well.
He also disclosed that Hugh Masekela has undertaken a commitment to help establish a heritage link which will bring not only international African artiste to Ghana but to also help raise the bar for our local artistes. He said Kasapreko will be bringing in more of Africa's greatest performers and stars.
Commenting on Hugh Masekela's performance Martyn Mensah said "it was tightly choreographed, well rehearsed and excellent instrumentation. There is a lot we can learn from that".
Mr. Edward Boateng Executive Chairman of Global Media Alliance, said "as a leading event and media company, we pride ourselves in bringing quality entertainment to the people of Ghana and indeed Africa."
The Hugh Masekela concert was held yesterday November 19, 2011, at the State Banquet Hall. Other artistes who performed that night were the sensational Efya, King of burger highlife George Darko and highlife artiste Pat Thomas. Ace satirist Kwaku Sintim Misa was the Master of Ceremony for the night and he dazzled the audience with some of his jokes. He also seized the opportunity to announce his upcoming comedy show ´Afia Siriboa´ on 25th December 2011.
