New Horizon Special School launches 40th anniversary

The New Horizon Special School has launched a fund to help children and adults with special needs in the country. Code named: “The Helen Francois educational fund”, its launch coincides with the school’s 40th anniversary.
The school was set up some 40 years ago to accommodate children and adults with special needs. Founder of the school, Salomey Francois, established the school after learning her daughter Helena was autistic.
She quit her full time job as a radiographer and dedicated her time and energy to her child, leading her to the establishment of the New Horizon Special School. The school which began with three students now has a roll of over hundred students.
Launching the anniversary, Mrs. Salomey Francois expresses satisfaction that the school had survived.
The stigmatization of children and adults alike with special needs children and adults in the society has reduced in recent times. However, there are still instances of rejection and discrimination. Children and adults at the New Horizon Special School are given technical and vocational training at the school as a way of integrating them in society and to help them to be responsible and independent children and adults.
As public perception of special needs children and adults continue to lower, a sensitisation programme is being planned to further reduce the stigma affecting children and adults with special needs.
