Education ministry sets up "BECE task force"

Minister of Education, Betty Mould Iddrisu has set up a task force to implement a number of measures expected to result in improve the performance in the 2012 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

Deputy Minister of Education, Mahama Ayariga will lead the task force on a tour of the Northern Region, Upper East Region and Upper West Region from Thursday December 8 to Sunday December 18, 2011, to mobilise social and political support for the initiative.

A statement issued by the Ministry said during the tour, Mr. Ayariga will hold durbars with prospective BECE candidates for 2012, their teachers, GES district and regional directors, chiefs, religious leaders, opinion leaders and Metropolitan/Municipal/District Assemblies and their Education Oversight Committees to outline the measures to be implemented and solicit their inputs and support. 

Some of the measures to be implemented to enhance better BECE performance will include the assessment of teacher needs in various districts categorized by subject areas.

Emphasis will also be placed on the core subjects and the the mobilization and posting or reposting of teachers to the districts with the support of the National Service Secretariat (NSS) and the District/Municipal/Metropolitan Assemblies in collaboration with the Regional Coordinating Councils.

The tour will as well look at the organisation of a Teaching Orientation Programme for the 5,000 Volunteer Teachers and the 36,000 National Service Personnel posted to the Education Sector for 2011/2012.

Other measures include extra tuition hours and holidays tuition for candidates; a lunch a day for JHS 3 BECE candidates and their teachers as well as conduct a series of mock examinations in all the assisted districts to adequately prepare the students before the main examinations.
