Violent students destroy properties at Osei Tutu II SHS

A violent demonstration by students of the Osei Tutu II Senior High School, formerly Tetrem Senior High School, at Tetrem in the Afigya Kwabre District in the Ashanti Region last Sunday night has resulted in massive destruction of property.

The Daily Graphic reports that louvre blades at the boys’ dormitory block have been smashed, while a water reservoir and a pumping machine have been damaged.

The school bus, according to the newspaper has been dented, and the personal belongings of the housemaster, Mr Kwasi Yeboah, have been destroyed as the student anarchists turned the school into an arena of rage.

The demonstration was a spontaneous reaction by the students to a search conducted by Mr Yeboah to identify  those who missed church service and went to town without permission.

In the midst of the night’s disturbances, teachers who lived on campus had to flee for their dear lives.

The headmaster of the school, Mr Samuel Ekuoba Gyas told the Daily Graphic that both the regional and district directors of education were on campus to assess the situation and decide whether to close down the school or not.

Giving details on the disturbances, the headmaster said following the failure by some of the students to attend the Sunday evening church service, the housemaster suspected they had sneaked to town.

In what was an attempt to instil discipline, the housemaster conducted a search and found a number of students in un-prescribed attire, and with mobile phones.

The headmaster said, the seizure of mobile phones and attires from the students led to the students' throwing stones at the housemaster who had left to his residence.

Not satisfied, the students chased Mr Gyamfi to the house and even though he managed to escape unhurt, his property running into hundreds of Ghana Cedis were destroyed.

“In fact, I can confirm to you that almost everything in the housemaster’s residence has been destroyed,” the headmaster told the Daily Graphic.

According to the newspaper, the students then turned to destroy school property.

Mr Gyasi condemned the attacks and said appropriate action would be taken to punish the offending students.

A number of the students who allegedly took part in the disturbances have fled the school. Meanwhile, the police are handling the criminal aspect of the demonstration.

The District Chief Executive, Mr Kaakyire Oppong Kyekyeku, also condemned the rioting and said the district security committee would study the situation and act appropriately.
