Ministry of Education to consider subsidizing cost of science education

The Ministry of Education is considering the possibility of subsidizing the cost involved in science education in the country’s public universities.

The proposal was announced by Deputy Minister for Education, Mahama Ayariga, when he took his turn to answer questions on the floor of Parliament yesterday.

The Deputy Minister admitted that the teaching and learning of science in the country was very expensive and added that considerations would be taken to engage the universities to discuss how the cost could be reduced.

The MPs also sought to find out if the Ministry had an approved fee to be charged by the various universities since lately, university students have demonstrated against the university administration for hiking student fees without prior notice and approval.

In his response, Mahama Ayariga said the fees were not determined by the ministry; rather by the universities’ councils after a consensus with the Students Representative Council of the various universities.

The MPs also questioned the Minister on government’s plans to provide a new dormitory block for the Ntonso Adventist Girl’s High School which has now been closed down after a fire outbreak razed the dormitory.

The Deputy Minister responded that the school did not have a boarding facility and therefore could not be provided one although a plan was being considered by the Ghana Education Service and the Ministry of Education to provide one.
