We don't want CSSPS abolished-NAGRAT
The Vice President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has stated the association’s stance on calls for the abolishment of the Computerised School Selection and Placement Systems (CSSPS).
Speaking on e.tv Ghana’s Awake, the Vice President of NAGRAT, Angel Kabonu said NAGRAT is not in agreement with calls by some individuals and civil society groups for the total abolishment of the CSSPS.
Rather, he said, NAGRAT’s call is for a thorough investigation into the abnormalities which are threatening the effectiveness of the system.
He said as stakeholders, NAGRAT is concerned with the process of placement since members of the association are responsible for teaching the students who are brought to the school and the manner in which the student gained admission.
Mr Kabonu noted that the CSSPS was done on merit. However, according to him, due to corrupt manner in which the placement was being done, some students were not being placed on merit.
He said there was a need for government to identify the fallouts in the system, correct them and develop a well structured system.
He, however, acknowledged that the CSSPS was a better option to the manual system.
Mr Kabonu also attributed the increasing demand of parents and students for particular senior high schools to government’s inability to provide an equal standard for the over 500 senior high schools in the country.
Speaking in a phone interview with host Rashida Nasamu, the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Paul Krampah, said calls for the abolishment of the CSSPS due to purported corruption in the system were uncalled for since no concrete evidence have been made available.
He also debunked assertions that the placements were not done on merit, explaining that the difficulty being experienced with the system was that most often than not more students choose highly competitive programmes such as General Arts and Science.
