Blame school system for rising unemployment-Veep
Vice President John Dramani Mahama has blamed the high level of graduate unemployment in the country partly on the failure of the school systems to churn out products to match existing opportunities on the job market.
According to him, the market is saturated with Business and General Arts graduates, as few students take up courses in Vocational Skills, Science and Technology which more often than not, provide opportunities for innovation and self employment.
The vice president made the comments when he addressed the First Youth Entrepreneurial Fair in Accra on Thursday. The two-day fair which is being organised by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development aims to significantly reduce the high rate of graduate unemployment in the country.
He encouraged the youth, especially graduates to be innovative and adventurous. He said: “The purpose of this fair is to try and encourage young people to not only think or accept that the only employment they can find is to work for somebody else but that you can also become an employer and also employ people to work for you. ”
“Right now everybody is doing an MBA, Business Administration or Human Resource Development and all that, but we also need to look at what the market wants and reform the school system so that it is producing what the market wants, so that people can come in and find work. ”
Meanwhile, the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, said his ministry is working to reserve 10 employment spaces each year for graduates in all District Assembly offices in the country.
