GIFF kick against proposed bill
The Ghana Institute of Freight Forwarders (GIFF) has expressed worry over a proposed bill in Parliament.
The bill introduced by the Ghana Shippers Authority is intended to regulate the operations of freight forwarders in the country. However, the freight forwarders are worried the bill when passed will push them out of business.
Freight forwarders, who help shippers clear their goods at the ports, are not accountable to the Ghana Shippers Authority. The bill when passed by parliament intends to control their operations.
This has not gone down well with the freight forwarders who are demanding the withdrawal of the bill for amendments.
The bill requires freight forwarders to file their charges with the shipper’s authority in relation to the clearance of cargo.
The bill also requires freight forwarders to maintain a minimum standard and quality of service. But the GIFF thinks this will push many of their members out of job.
According to GIFF, their activities are supervised by Ghana Maritime Authority and Customs Division of Ghana Revenue Authority. The institute is at a loss why another institution will be mandated to supervise their operations.
The Institute is however determined to use the necessary measures to ensure a workable and fruitful legislation is passed for the growth of the sector.
