Vodafone beats Tigo to become second largest operator

According to the latest statistics from the National Communications Authority (NCA), Vodafone Ghana has overtaken Tigo as the second largest mobile phone operator in Ghana in terms of market share.
Vodafone had showed signs of overtaking Tigo as at mid-year 2011 when it was just about two percent short of Tigo’s total subscriber base. By the end of September last year, Vodafone Ghana had recorded a 32. 5 percent growth in half year service revenue.
The difference between Vodafone, now the second largest operator and Tigo is marginal. The latest figures show that Vodafone now has a little over 4,179,000 while Tigo has a little over 4,030,000 subscribers after losing some customers within the period.
According to the statistics, Vodafone gained more subscribers between September and November 2011. Expresso continued to lose more market share and still remains the operator with the lowest market share with its figures now hovering about 191, 779.
The report shows that Express lost over 7,000 subscribers between October and November last year. Airtel continued to gain more customers but maintained the fourth position among the six operators with about 2. 5 million subscribers. MTN reversed the six months continuous loss of market share after hitting the 10 millionth subscriber mark.
Meanwhile, a statement to the shareholders of MTN indicates that the millions of dollars worth of shares have been given to the MTN Group of directors for performing well last year, in accordance with the company’s performance share plan.
A former MTN Ghana boss Brett Goschen, now MTN Nigeria Director, and former MTN Nigeria Director, now MTN West and Central Africa Director, Ahmed Farouk were among the beneficiaries. It is still the largest telecom operator with about 10,053,000 customers as at November 2011.
