Petrol to sell at 20 pesewas less

A gallon of petrol is expected to sell at 20 pesewas less following a marginal reduction in fuel prices directed by government.

Early this year, the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) announced a 20 per cent increase in petroleum prices as a result of government’s decision to withdraw subsidies on the products.

The increase led to massive outcries by civil society organisations and pressure groups who called for government’s intervention into the matter due to the untold hardship it had brought on the ordinary Ghanaian worker.

Following a lengthy discussion with the Ghana Trades Union Congress (GTUC), government has finally agreed to reduce the prices marginally by 5 per cent of the initial 20 per cent increase. The agreement was contained in a communiqué jointly signed by the outgoing Minister of Employment and Social Welfare, Mr E. T. Mensah and the Secretary General of the GTUC, Mr Kofi Asamoah.

Speaking on an Accra-base radio station, Joy Fm, Mr E. T. Mensah said government had agreed with the workers’ union that the recent 15 per cent increase will be reduced by 20 per cent to 12 per cent. He added that the new price changes are expected to be effected today, Monday, February 6, 2012.

This means that, petrol which is selling at GHC7.90 per gallon due to the increase is now expected to sell at GHC7.69 per gallon.
